About the Project

Whitehorse Council, which is based in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne set out on an ambitious plan to create a cultural centre that would become a hub for leisure, entertainment, business events, and support the local arts community. It went on to award the $56m project designed by BKK Architects to Kane Constructions.

The project features an auditorium, studio theatre, rehearsal/dance studio, events space and car parking for greater accessibility to surrounding facilities.

With years of experience working on Community Infrastructure projects, Signal and Hobbs tendered for, and was awarded, the roofing and cladding component of this project.

This project, which is known as “The Round” features curved roofing and wall elements, specified in the striking Colorbond® Metallic Callisto Gold and included the roofing and cladding in Spanform™ 24mm and Kingklip® 700. Signal and Hobbs also engaged sister company Roofing & Sheetmetal Centre to fabricate the metal roofing products including custom curved flashing for a professional finish.

Kane Constructions and BKK Architects have gone on to be recognized as winner at the 2024 Master Builders Association of Victoria Excellence in Construction for Commercial Buildings $30M-$80M and has been commended in two categories at the Australian Institute of Architecture Awards.

Property Maintenance

If you are managing a facility, the quarterly roof maintenance check is important to protect the warranty on your roofing products. Keep a record of all works done on the roof including details of the tradespeople who attended and the work they undertake.

This is important as trades that follow roofers may:

use dissimilar metal products or leave swarf on the roof – both of which can lead to premature corrosion.
create new roof penetrations that may affect the roof performance
use certain types of timber (for example wood treated with copper chromium arsenic) that are incompatible with Zincalume, Colorbond and Galvanised Steel
may incorrectly discharge services such as air conditioning units onto roofing materials

Using our expertise and specialist skills on the unique star shaped architecturally acclaimed, Penguin Parade Visitor Centre is a great example of how the Signal & Hobbs team approaches and successfully delivers these projects.

Wayne Mclean, Signal & Hobbs Director and Project Manager said;

“Our experience with sheetmetal, aluminium, polycarbonate, fibreglass, insulated façade panels and steel means we can offer solutions for many applications,”

The visitor centre installation was extremely time consuming due to the angled design and each of the 800 plus roofing sheets having to be cut top and bottom before fitting, plus daily cleaning of the metal swarf caused from the cutting.

The team also had to deal with challenging site conditions including harsh weather, high winds and cold temperatures.

Taking a practical and measured approach, the site team completed the works in line with the project programme. Signal & Hobbs also installed the safe access system to the roof area, designed and installed in conjunction with Synergy Access. The system allows building maintenance staff to access and safely complete roofing duties.

WARRNAMBOOL BASE HOSPITAL REDEVELOPMENT

Signal & Hobbs were engaged by Hansen Yuncken to complete the roofing and façade for the new Regional Logistics Distribution Centre (RLDC) as the as part of the Warrnambool Base Hospital redevelopment.

The client Victorian Health Building Authority / South West Health Care set specific Green Star & ESD requirements for the building which were met by a scope of works including a Kingspan insulated panel roof and wall system.

The RLDC will provide linen and healthcare supply services to help streamline the distribution of healthcare supplies and linen to more than 50 health providers in the region. It provides a safer and modern working environment for health service workers. Completion of the RDLC also meant that South West Healthcare could move their linen and healthcare supply services to the RDLC freeing up space at the main campus for the major redevelopment.

Signal & Hobbs sourced and supplied materials in a combination of standard Colorbond colours and special made-to-order colours. The roof was completed in Kingspan’s RW1000 insulated roof panel in Colorbond® Windspray. Thewalls used a combination of custom colours including EvolutionHoney Glow, Blade Green & Pale Eucalypt to provide a vibrant façade of the building.

Local contractor Warrnambool Cranes were engaged by Signal & Hobbs to achieve the installation of the roof and wall panels and worked closely with Dale Humphries, our site foreman, to achieve the tight timeframes required for the project.

Although the project was a 3.5 hour drive from Melbourne, core Signal & Hobbs team members relocated to Warrnambool for the duration of the project which was a valuable contribution.

Working through the winter months meant that wind and rain were a factor on site however these were successfully mitigated and managed by close cooperation between Hansen Yuncken and Signal & Hobbs and careful attention to the programme.

Special mention goes to the Hansen Yuncken site team who were great to work with, providing clear direction and making sure the project ran smoothly for the site team.

Signal & Hobbs site foreman Dale Humphries said; “We enjoyed working with the Hansen Yuncken site team and look forward to working with them on the next project. Everyone worked together to make sure we all achieved the targets dates for completion.”

JUBILEE PARK INDOOR STADIUM

Signal & Hobbs were engaged to complete roofing and cladding works on the new Jubilee Park Indoor Stadium. The specification included an insulated panel roof and wall system to provide a building envelope which met all Green Star and ESD requirements for the client: Frankston City Council.

The building used Kingspan insulated roof panels and box gutters, the walls were also in a Kingspan insulated panel with Architectural Cladding Suppliers Snap lock cladding laid over a Eurobond substrate panel to give a crisp modern alternative to traditional standing seam on the façade.

To complete the project, the Signal & Hobbs crew installed 827 individual roof sheets, and 433 individual wall sheets, with craneage supplied by Sventek cranes. The crew achieved a seamless installation, though at times we experienced some challenges with weather given such a close proximity to Port Phillip bay.

SIGNAL & HOBBS SAFETY: EXPERIENCE COUNTS

Safety is important in any construction setting and especially in a business where team members are working at height and where the safety risks will evolve and change over the life of the project.

Benn Shinners, Safety Manager at Signal & Hobbs said;
“There are hundreds of things to be aware of and address on each site and we work through a rigorous safety process for each new project – safety is a shared responsibility, everyone in the business is very conscious of safety and looking out for each other.”

While Signal & Hobbs is fortunate to have never had a major safety breech or incident this comes from an ongoing vigilance as far as safety is concerned.

Benn completes a comprehensive risk assessment for each project and prepares a specific safety program and controls for every project. Throughout the project he is on site regularly to conduct safety reviews, pre-start safety meetings and site observations to ensure compliance with our Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS).

Benn added;
“It’s important to follow the correct process and not to take shortcuts or develop bad habits. The industry evidence shows that shortcuts and bad habits can lead to incidents and eventually accidents. We need to keep the team focussed on safety and safe work practices to avoid that.”

QUEENSCLIFF FERRY TERMINAL

Signal & Hobbs were proud to have been selected by the head contractor Kane Constructions to complete the roof and cladding works on the new Queenscliff Ferry Terminal in Victoria.

The building is an architectural landmark that services commuters and day trippers embarking on the ferry journey across Port Phillip Bay.

The terminal is an entirely new building, and the total project was valued at $16m. The building has two floors, is nearly 100m long including the two wings at either end and is expected to service around 250,000 vehicles and 950,000 people annually. The terminal will provide weather protection for passengers boarding or disembarking the Searoad Ferries across all seasons.

An important architectural feature of the building is the organic and interrupted flow of the stainless-steel roof and façade installed by Signal & Hobbs.

Signal & Hobbs were responsible for the installation of the stainless-steel panels used for the roof, façade, canopy lining and parts of the interior. It is the use of stainless-steel for the curved roof and cladding that set the building apart.
